Last year was the first time I'd ever seen a western tiger swallowtail. I'd though I was seeing a new species of butterfly only to find out that they are quite common to the region. It took a camera for me to see them. That is actually quite sad considering that they are very bright and fairly large, standing out brilliantly against the background. This particular butterfly must have been rather young for it had not yet developed a fear for humans and actually stepped on to my finger and lingered for a while before fluttering off to a more colorful and tastly resting place.

Just yesterday I made a very similar shot. They do stay still for quite a while, I guess while they drink/eat, which is very kind to us photographers. Mine was on a bottlebrush flower, also very red. Perhaps they are attracted by that color. One day I'll post mine. Great that these large beauties open up our eyes, eh?
