I can think of a million things wrong with this picture... the subject is too small, no focal point, too spread out, bad lighting and contrast, too grainy. I considered cropping it but I lost the only element that made this image work for me... the sheer number of mosquitoes that surrounded me as I walked by the ponds. Focusing on such a tiny creature in flight was impossible so I just pointed at the thickest part of the swarm and shot a single picture. I was heavily coated with repellant which seemed to act as an attractant to them and they escorted me during my entire trip. Thankfully I didn't sustain a single bite although I did experience the misfortune of inhaling a couple of the bugs into my nostrils. Even looking at the picture, many months later, I still shudder at the memory. And yet... there is something oddly hypnotic about the almost alien shape of the insects in flight.
Its almost mosquito and tick season again. Do you have your DEET?

I really like this shot - it looks like some intricate pattern - or something you would look at under a microscope

In the thumbnail version, they actually did look like aircrafts:) I can imagine you must have had a very bad time with them. Good shot.

@Sujit: They sounded like aircraft as well! The only thing worse than hearing a mosquito is NOT hearing a mosquito but knowing its there somewhere!
Thanks for your comments
OH this is a swarm of mosquitos....?? Any way you caught many buddy

I initially thought they were helicopters until I read your description. Interesting photo, even if not technically great.

Reminds me of Apocalypse Now....I'm hearing Ride of the Valkyries. I love the smell of deet in the morning.

@Kris Carson: Hahaha! Thats EXACTLY what I was thinking when I posted this picture. That seen from the movie is my favorite.
Thanks for sharing your memory (story and picture) with us. It's a vivid shot.

Wow, those look like mammoth mosquitoes.. I like the accidental pattern of this shot.

@Nick Passantino: On my screen the mosquitoes are life sized... yes, they are really THAT BIG! I don't even know for a fact that they are mosquitoes because if you look closely they have a hook like thing that curls out its back and over its head unlike anything I've ever seen.
They do look huge! I initially thought it was a swarm of grasshopers! But, whether they are mosquitoeso rgrasshopers, it is still a great shot! Well done

I'm shuddering with you mate! They could almost be dragonflies. Some of them being in focus really gives a 3 dimensional element to the image. Nice one!

simply marvalous. you got to love making something work for you, even if it doesn't meet "standards"

I think it is amazing that you were able to capture such tiny little creatures in such numbers - amazing!

@Scene by Sharon Photography: I was pleased that the insects even showed up in the picture, but they really weren't that tiny.... They were big and scary!
It's funny how some shots that seem to be technically flawed can still communicate very powerfully. Nice shot!

I really like this shot. It's very effective the way it turned out. Lots of impact I think.
In NJ we jokingly refer to the mosquito as the NJ state bird, although after looking at this, I may have to revise that.
